Officials believe heavy rain caused a sinkhole to open up in Searsport.

The Bangor Daily News reports that a seven feet deep and 15 feet wide sinkhole opened up Friday morning on Prospect Street, causing the wheel of a garbage truck to go through the road.

Searsport Town Manager James Gillway says the truck was towed out of the hole and the driver was not injured.

Crews filled the hole and paved over it by mid-morning on Friday.

Gillway believes the sinkhole formed due to heavy rains that have hit the coast recently, causing the gravel to shift beneath the road.
