SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A Maine city council has approved sweeping regulations for short-term home rentals offered by websites like Airbnb.

The regulations approved Tuesday by the South Portland City Council will ban non-hosted stays in residential neighborhoods, while giving short-term rental operators a grace period to fully shut down by September.

Councilors acknowledged some short-term rental operators will be unhappy, but the vote is to preserve neighborhoods in the face of community division.

The vote was 6-1, with Councilor Adrian Dowling opposed. Dowling says he believed the council should have established a committee.

The regulations will allow people who live in a building they are renting temporarily to host short-term rentals in residential areas, but there will be restrictions on the number of guests allowed to stay.
