SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) South Portland Police say a high school student is in custody after making potential threats against the school on Thursday morning.

Around 8:15am Thursday morning, students reported the posts made over Snapchat the night before, which included threats of “shooting up the school.” They were later retracted, according to police. The School Resource Officer determined that the student hadn’t shown up at school yet. Police were dispatched to the school while other officers began the search for the student. He was found walking to the school and was detained. Police say he had a knife on him and was arrested for Terrorizing and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. No guns were found.

The student, who is a juvenile and described by police as a 15-year-old male, will be placed on house arrest while autorities investigate.

Lt. Frank Clark of the South Portland Police department says he applauds the students who came forward to report the threats. Clark encourages parents and family members to keep tabs on the social media accounts of their children and friends.
