South Portland House Fire Damages Porch

There’s substantial damage to a porch, but the rest of the house is not harmed from a Monday morning fire in South Portland.

Firefighters say they were sent to the home at 28 Columbus Avenue at 9:51 a.m. after bystanders were not able to put out the fire with fire extinguishers.

Crews say they quickly brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the building.

The cause of the fire was determined to be improperly discarded smoking materials.

The South Portland Fire Department reminds the public to always use a sturdy, non-combustible container when disposing of smoking materials to prevent accidental fires.

There were no reports of injuries in the fire.

The Department says firefighters from Portland assisted on scene.
