Police say a man from South Portland drowned in the Saco River on Sunday.

Buxton police said 38-year-old Abiodun Jerry Roland Olubi fell into the river at Pleasant Point Park in Buxton Sunday afternoon. A woman witnessed the accident and told police the man had fallen into the water off of a slippery rock outcrop, and that she didn’t believe he knew how to swim.

Search and rescue personnel checked the water and found Olubi’s body at a depth of about 50 feet.

Police remind the public that the Saco River is very deep in that area. They called the incident a “tragic accident” and expressed their condolences to the family.
