ALFRED (WGAN)- York County law enforcement set up multiple sobriety checkpoints Thursday in advance of Memorial Day Weekend. Police want to ensure that no one is putting anyone at risk on the road. The “pre-season” checkpoints are intended as a reminder that it’s fine to have fun, but to not get behind the wheel and drive afterwards, according to Major Paul Mitchell of the York County Sheriff’s Department. Mitchell adds that while it is a minor inconvenience, the stops only take approximately twenty seconds, and that alcohol and drug related crashes account for nearly one third of all traffic accidents in Maine.
