Maine’s attorney general has concluded that a fatal shooting by police in which officers mistook a knife for a gun was justified.
Attorney General Aaron Frey released the findings of the investigation on Wednesday. The shooting happened last February in Minot, and left 44-year-old Jason Gora dead. It happened after Gora’s family suspected he may have been suicidal and called police to conduct a well-being check.
Police who responded said Gora led them on a chase, which ended in the fatal shooting. According to the report, all four officers believed Gora had a gun, even though dispatchers told them he was unarmed and his brother had the weapon.
An autopsy showed Gora was hit with eight bullets. They also found that there was a high level of methamphetamine in his body at the time of his death.
According to CBS 13, Frey fast-tracked the investigation due to public pressure, despite a backlog of 17 other cases that are being investigated.
