HARPSWELL, Maine (AP) Authorities in Maine say they located and detonated a military projectile that was caught in the gear of a fishing vessel.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says it responded to a report of a suspicious object found Monday on the docks of a Harpswell lobster wharf. Deputies who responded examined the object and determined it was some kind of ballistic projectile used by the military.

The object had been caught in the gear of a fishing boat, pulled aboard and transported to land. The sheriff’s office says it was found about 12 miles off the coast of Harpswell.

The U.S. Navy and Maine State Police bomb squad were both notified. The sheriff’s office says state police responded and removed the object, and it was later detonated in a sand pit.
