Human remains found in Washington County believed to be man missing since July

JONESPORT, Maine (WGAN) Maine State Police say they believe human remains found in Jonesport on Thursday belong to that of an Addison man who went missing last July.

Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland on Friday said the remains are believed to be that of 43-year-old William Merchant, who was last seen on July 4th. The remains were found off Route 187 near Wilder’s Way on Thursday.

An autopsy was conducted Friday, but a cause of death could not be determined due to the condition of the remains. Detectives said there was no evidence of foul play.

Additional work will be done to confirm the identity, but McCausland said items found with the body indicate it is Merchant.
