Spokesman Aaron Turcotte with the State Police said that Saturday was very active on the Maine Turnpike, I-95, and I-295 which they usually patrol.
It had been snowing for several hours, and the roads were not entirely cleared by the time people needed to be out.
Although there had not been any serious crashes, the interstates and the Maine Turnpike had dozens of accidents on Saturday.
According to CBS 13 news one such crash occurred around 6 a.m. in Litchfield on I-95 northbound.
In this case the occupant of the vehicle had been trapped and required the jaws of life to be used in order to be removed from the car. The occupant was then transported to the hospital.
Another accident in Wales occurred where a car had been flipped. The Fire Department had to check on fluids and other hazards in that case.
A couple other accidents occurred in the state including a car that went off the roadway in Bowdoin and struck a tree and an accident that involved a small car and a tractor trailer on I-295.
WGME-13 weather authority predicts more difficult conditions continuing on Sunday that will start to wind down at night.
Freezing rain and sleet are predicted and should change to rain later in the day.
