The state says a major data breach by Russian hackers may have compromised the personal information of over a million people, including thousands of Mainers.

According to CBS 13, potential victims of the breach include anyone who worked for or had contact with the Maine Department of Education, the DHHS and potentially other state agencies.

The breach occurred in May when Russian hackers exploited a vulnerability in a widely used file-transfer software called “MOVEit”.

Many state employees were only notified about the hacking recently, despite the breach occurring around 6 months ago.

The data stolen could include date of birth, driver’s license number, social security number and medical information.

The state says it is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to any victims.

A toll-free number is available at (877) 618-3659 for anyone to call and find out if their information was stolen.
