AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) The statue of the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court when it decided the case 1896 case that legalized racial segregation will be moved from outside a Maine court house.
Melville Fuller was an Augusta native and chief justice when the top U.S. Court decided Plessy v. Ferguson, which established the “separate but equal” doctrine. The Kennebec Journal reports the Kennebec County commissioners board voted unanimously Tuesday to move the statue installed in 2013.
Commissioners will appoint a committee to decide where to move the statue.
In August, the Maine judicial branch sent a letter to the commissioners asking them to consider moving the statue
