Police have arrested the stepfather of a four-year-old boy who they say found a loaded gun on a dresser and fired a bullet into a neighbor’s apartment.

Police responded to a report of a gunshot originating from the home on New Meadows Road in West Bath around 8 a.m. Thursday.

Deputies believe the boy picked up the gun while the stepfather was away and fired a bullet into the wall, which entered the apartment next door. There were no injuries.

24-year-old Stephen Ambrose was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. He’s due in court in January.
