Powerful winds knock out power to more than 100,000 Maine homes, businesses

A powerful storm with gusts topping 60 mph swept through Maine Monday night and into Tuesday morning, knocking out electricity to more than 100,000 homes and businesses.

Officials say the wind gusted Monday evening to 63 mph in Cape Elizabeth, 61 mph in Eastport and 58 mph in Bangor.

Mike Cempa from the National Weather Service says the storm dropped more than 3 inches of rain on some locations.

The rain begin began falling steadily on Monday and the wind grew during the evening.

According to the Portland Press Herald, CMP says outages peaked at 91,137 at 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The utility keeps an updated list of power outages on its website.

In northern and Down East Maine, Versant Power was reporting about 12,300 outages at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
