11-year-old student charged with setting fires in school bathrooms

PARIS, Maine (WGAN) The State Fire Marshal’s Office on Tuesday charged an 11-year-old girl with setting fires in two bathrooms at Paris Elementary School.

The sixth grader was charged with arson and released to the custody of her parents.

The Sun Journal reports that students were bused to Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School to finish out the day after they were evacuated from the building. SAD 17 superintendent Rick Colpitts says the fires were set in two bathrooms at nearly the same time. One fire extinguished itself before it could spread and the other, discovered around 9 A.M. Tuesday, was put out by staff and fire officials.

Colpitts says there was minimal damage but the soot will need to be cleaned up by a third-party contractor. There were no injuries.
