Bangor police say a suspect was armed with a knife and he “attempted to remove one of the officer’s weapons from its holster” after he was stopped near Odlin Road and Interstate 395. The traffic stop occurred Monday at about 11:30 p.m.
According to a press release, officer Allen Michael Jones stopped the man’s vehicle to address a suspended driver’s license issue. During that traffic stop, Officer Jones recognized one of the passengers as Montorio Calhoun, 41, whose current address is not know.
Officer Jones was aware that Calhoun had fled from a traffic stop in Bangor last week due to having a warrant for his arrest, the release said
Another officer arrived to assist Officer Jones, and the two officers had Calhoun exit the vehicle. Upon trying to take Calhoun into custody, police say he began to fight the two officers. The release said that during the struggle, Calhoun was armed with a knife and also attempted to remove one of the officer’s weapons from its holster.
The officers were eventually able to gain control of Calhoun and he was taken into custody.
Officer Jones reportedly suffered a laceration to his forearm during the struggle and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
Calhoun was transported to the Penobscot County Jail, where he was charged with aggravated assault, assault on a police officer and refusing to submit to arrest.
Calhoun was also booked on three warrants from Hancock County charging him with aggravated trafficking, possession of methamphetamines and violation of bail.
Further charges could be pending due to suspected narcotics located in the vehicle, police said.
