Sweetser to discontinue mental health therapy at five southern Maine locations

A nonprofit mental health provider is discontinuing clinic-based mental health therapy at five Maine locations.

A spokesperson for Sweetser said beginning next month, clinics in Saco, Sanford, Brunswick, Lewiston and York will no longer offer mental health therapy.

The Portland Press Herald reports the move affects about 450 patients and 25 employees.

The spokesperson said reimbursement rates from medicaid and private insurance companies weren’t high enough for Sweetser to continue offering therapy services at the clinics.

Sweetser vice president of programs Jim Martin said the decision was incredibly difficult, and the company will work with patients to find other mental health service providers.
