A third person has been indicted in connection with the Castine car crash that killed four Maine Maritime Academy students in December.
According to the Bangor Daily News, Noelle Tavares of Massachusetts was one of three people to survive the crash and was indicted Friday on 13 counts, including four counts of manslaughter and a criminal OUI.
Joshua Goncalves-Radding of New York, the driver of the car, and Dominick Gecoya of Massachusetts were indicted on the same charges. The charges against Gecoya, who owned the car, were dismissed Friday.
District attorney for Hancock County, Paul Granger says Tavares has been charged under a provision known as the accomplice liability, which allows criminal charges to be brought against someone who wasn’t driving but participated in unlawful conduct that led to the crash.
The crash occurred around 2 a.m. on Dec. 10, 2022, when the vehicle, traveling southbound on Route 166, went off the road and hit a tree, causing it to burst into flames.
Granger estimated in a previous statement that the speed of the vehicle was between 106 and 111 mph when it left the road.
