WINTHROP, Maine (AP) Officials in Winthrop, Maine are considering a moratorium on medical marijuana shops in order to give the town time to create regulations.
The Kennebec Journal reports town councilors voted to draft the proposal Monday. Officials say businessman Jason Smith’s proposal to open a medical cannabis shop won’t be affected by the plan. Smith had planned to file an application for the business Thursday.
Councilor Andy Wess says pushing the moratorium on Smith wouldn’t be fair.
Smith declined to comment on the shop when he was contacted earlier this week.
Maine became the eighth state to legalize marijuana for adults age 21 and older in 2017. The drug can’t be sold in the state for recreational purposes.
