Tractor-trailer crash shuts down I-295 in Yarmouth

Only minor injuries were reported when a tractor-trailer flipped over on I-295 in Yarmouth Wednesday morning.

Maine State Police said the crash happened around 9 a.m. at mile marker 17 northbound. An initial investigation found that the driver, a 55-year-old New Hampshire man, hit a patch of snow and lost control, causing the trailer to become detached and land on a car.

The driver of the car was hospitalized with minor injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.

The tractor-trailer was hauling compressed natural gas cylinders. Yarmouth Fire and Rescue said no gas was released.

In an update Wednesday evening, police said the highway remained closed. They expected it to reopen by 9 p.m.

Traffic was being diverted at Exit 17 in Yarmouth.
