A trial that will decide the fate of a $1 billion hydropower corridor project in Maine concludes on Wednesday.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the trial is the result of a suit filed by opponents of the project, who claim that the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Land Use Planning Commission violated state laws and regulations when they granted permits for the power line.

The plaintiffs, who include environmental groups, landowners and Native American tribes, argue that the power line would harm Maine’s natural resources, scenic values and cultural heritage.

After closing arguments, the judge will issue a decision that could either uphold or revoke the permits for the power line.
