Maine State Police say a tractor-trailer hauling potatoes crashed in Fairfield Thursday afternoon after trying to avoid a wrong-way driver.

State police reported the crash on I-95 at mile marker 131 southbound at 1:30 p.m. They said the driver of the truck was not injured.

The wrong-way driver was identified as 71-year-old Randolph Gerry of Winslow, who was later stopped on Route 201 near the Purple Cow restaurant.

He was charged with driving to endanger and driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

Officers said Gerry showed no signs of impairment and has no known medical conditions.
