Two Bangor police officers were injured after trying to arrest a man accused of robbery and assault at a convenience store.

Bangor police say they responded to a report of a robbery at the store at 575 Hammond Street on Sunday around 9 p.m. 32-year-old Joshua Ireland allegedly took items from the store and then assaulted an employee before fleeing on foot.

Ireland is accused of punching an officer who later tried to take him into custody nearby. Police said he continued to struggle, until two more officers showed up and helped to arrest him.

Ireland was taken to Penobscot County Jail and faces charges of robbery, assault on an officer, and refusing to submit to arrest.

Two officers sustained multiple injuries and were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
