The Portland School District says a parent was stopped and detained Thursday morning while dropping off their student at Gerald E. Talbot Community School.

Superintendent Ryan Scallon sent a letter to family and staff, saying unidentified law enforcement agents with vests marked “police”, in unmarked vehicles, detained the parent.

Scallon said the officers declined to identify themselves or their agency when approached by a school administrator.

He said Portland Police confirmed they were not Portland police officers.

“Today’s incident is troubling, and the impact on our school community is chilling. We are continuing to gather information and may be limited in what we share as we continue to support the family and school community,” Scallon said in the letter.

It’s not known if the parent is still being detained.
