WINTERPORT, Maine (WGAN) A Waldo County man accused of sexually abusing and exploiting several children and sharing images of the abuse online was arrested in Texas.

32-year-old Steven Mathis of Winterport was taken into custody in Whitney, Texas on November 16th, according to the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit. They said he fled to Texas fearing an investigation by police in Maine.

Mathis was extradited back to Maine and is being held on $50,000 bail.

Authorities say Mathis confessed to sexually abusing several identified children, along with uploading the images online and sharing them with others. Investigators seized an electronic device from his home which they say contained evidence consistent with his confession.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected.
