UPDATE: Buxton Police and the Maine Warden service recovered the body of 17-year-old Steel Crawford, a Freeport High School Student.
According to our info partners at CBS 13, Crawford was swinging on a rope-swing when he awkwardly fell into the water, and he never resurfaced.
The initial call came in around 1pm, and Crawford’s body was found just after 6pm. The Warden Service says the river’s condition was the cause for the difficult search.
The Crawford family has asked for privacy while they mourn their loss.
BUXTON, Maine (WGAN) Game wardens are searching for a 17-year-old presumed drowned in the Saco River in Buxton.
Wardens say Steel Crawford of Freeport was swimming with friends at Pleasant Point Park in Buxton on Friday. He was swinging on a rope swing and then let go, landing awkwardly in deep water and never re-surfacing.
Wardens are searching the river near the Route 202 bridge and upriver of the Skelton Dam, where water depths are in excess of 50 feet.
Wardens say they’re searching along the shore by foot, on the water in boats, and were preparing Maine Warden Service divers to search the river.
