Waterville’s city council has approved an ordinance banning cooperation between city employees and ICE.

The measure, which applies to local police, comes after last week’s fatal shooting of Colombian national Johan Sebastian Guerrero by an ICE agent in Biddeford.

There was heated debate at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, with many residents saying trust in immigration authorities is low.

Some Waterville residents who spoke out against the ordinance say ICE has an important job to do in removing illegal immigrants from the country.

According to CBS 13 news, one city councilor said a proposed amendment that would have exempted local police from the ban could be revisited in the future.
