A suspect and a police officer were shot in a police chase Sunday.

The suspect, 29-year-old Richard Murray-Burns of Harmony, remained at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Sunday night.

Waterville police officer Timothy Hinton was treated and released from the hospital after being shot in both arms.

The chase began after Hinton responded to a report of a shoplifter at the Waterville Walmart.

He pulled Murray-Burns over on Route 201, and that’s when police say the suspect opened fire on Hinton with an assault-style weapon.

Officers from several agencies then pursued the suspect’s vehicle to Canaan, where the chase ended after several officers opened fired and wounded Murray-Burns.

In all, eight officers fired at the suspect.

They’ve all been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure following a police shooting in Maine.
