The Westbrook City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Monday that will open the door for more shelter beds in the city.
The ordinance allows for up to 80 total shelter beds across Westbrook, and gives the greenlight for private groups to operate their own shelters. Capacity at each shelter depends on the amount of space the shelters have.
City Councilor Jen Munro, who proposed the ordinance, says it’s designed for one or two families per shelter space.
Westbrook city officials say they aren’t immune to the state’s housing crisis. They also say there are currently over 70 homeless students enrolled in Westbrook schools.
