Whoopie pies to be star of a Maine festival

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine (AP) _ Mainers are set to take a day to celebrate their official state treat: the whoopie pie.

A festival honoring the whoopie pie starts Saturday morning in downtown Dover-Foxcroft and ends in the afternoon.

Made up of two cookie-like chocolate cakes stuffed to the gills with fluffy marshmallow filling, the whoopie pie is a sweet indulgence

The festival will feature whoopee pie eating contests and food vendors. A contest to glean the cream of the crop from a wide variety of flavor combinations.

Organizers also say participants can “earn your whoopee” with an early morning three-kilometer race and walk.
