PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN & PPH) A candidate for Portland City Council whose name was pulled out of a bowl after a tie has conceded after a recount on Wednesday.
Brandon Mazer’s name was picked out of an antique bowl in front of Portland City Hall last Friday after a ranked-choice runoff for an at-large seat left him with exactly the same number of votes as his opponent, school board member Roberto Rodriguez.
It’s likely the first tie in a ranked-choice election in U.S. history.
Rodriguez requested the recount, which got underway Tuesday and concluded Wednesday. According to the Portland Press Herald, Mazer, who’s a member of the city’s planning board, conceded Wednesday afternoon.
The recount on Tuesday put Rodriguez ahead of Mazer by 35 votes, but there were still 37 disputed ballots. It also concluded with 36 fewer votes than were counted on Election Day, which officials say could be a result of machine overcounts. They believe all of the ballots cast on Election Day were recounted Tuesday.
They said the overcount could have been from ballots that were run through the machine but the votes could not be read.
