ROCKLAND, Maine (WGAN) A Maine woman accused of killing an elderly woman in Owl’s Head pleads not guilty.

The Bangor Daily News reports that 37-year-old Sarah Richards made her plea in court in Rockland Tuesday morning to charges of murder and theft.

Richards was hired to shovel snow outside of 83-year-old Helen Carver’s home this past winter. Carver’s son found his mother unresponsive in the home, and Richards was accused of beating and strangling her in February.

Carver suspected that Richards had stolen her debit card in the weeks leading up her death. After changing her story multiple times, Richards claimed that she hit Carver with a tool after Carver came at her.
