Deputies in York County are warning the public about scammers pretending to work for U.S. Border Patrol out of Texas.

The York County Sheriff’s Office says a Shapleigh resident was recently targeted by the scam. The scammers called the victim and told them their ID had been found at an illegal border crossing. They were also told their name was being used on bank accounts believed to be holding drug money.

A second scammer claiming to be from the U.S. Treasury Department then told the victim they could either come to Texas or move the money into a U.S. treasury account.

The victim realized it was a scam and hung up.

Deputies are asking everyone to warn friends and family about the scam.
