Man dies in police custody after reported burglary in Oxford County

The Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating after a burglary suspect died while in police custody.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a report of a burglary at a home on Pratt Hill Road in Hartford around 8:45 p.m. Monday.

Police confronted 45-year-old Jacob Hackett, who they said was causing damage inside the home and then allegedly assaulted deputies when they confronted him.

Hackett was tased and taken into custody. Police say he suffered a medical event while they took him from the home in handcuffs. He later died at the hospital.

The death is under investigation.
