Pentagon officials said yesterday that the troop withdrawal process in Afghanistan is now at 90 percent. There will be no further updates on the numbers going forward for force protection reasons. Several hundred troops will stay behind to provide security at Kabul airport and the US Embassy, but some countries are closing their embassies and consulates because of the growing violence. The Taliban is making significant gains in the north now, and many Afghan soldiers are simply abandoning their posts. Meanwhile, the Afghan government has resurrected militias with brutal histories that raise the specter of another civil war once the U.S. withdrawal is finished, expected in August.
