A fatal single-vehicle accident caused a major natural gas leak, building evacuations, and local power disruptions in North Windham on the Fourth of July.

Windham Police say just before 8 am, a vehicle crossed the center line on Route 115, also known as Tandberg Trail, left the roadway, and slammed into an apartment building.

The impact severed a natural gas meter, forcing emergency crews to evacuate nearby homes, close the road, and cut power to the area as a precaution.

Police confirm the driver passed away at the scene.

Their identity is being withheld pending family notification, and the crash remains under investigation.
