Opponents of a proposed $1 billion project that would bring Canadian hydropower to the New England power grid are urging the Army Corps of Engineers to perform a full environmental impact statement.

Critics packed a public hearing Thursday on Central Maine Power’s proposed 145-mile (230-kilometer) transmission line.

They questioned the environmental benefits and argued that the project would hurt homegrown renewable projects in Maine.

Supporters say the project would suppress electricity rates and reduce carbon emissions by the equivalent of more than 700,000 vehicles.
