Augusta man accused of causing apartment fire by setting off fireworks

An Augusta man is charged with arson after police say he set off fireworks inside of his apartment.

Maine State Police say they responded to a fire at the apartment on Jefferson Street on Thursday evening. Other tenants in the building used fire extinguishers and a hose to put out the blaze.

44-year-old Gerald Stackpole is accused of setting off the fireworks. He was charged with arson and taken to Kennebec County Jail with bail set at $20,000 cash.

He was set to be arraigned on Friday.
