FAA launches investigation into object that crashed to the ground outside Maine Capitol

A member of the Maine Capitol Police was nearly struck Friday by a falling piece of debris that appeared to have come from an airplane.

Chief Matthew Clancy says the large metal object crashed to the ground just outside the main entrance to the Maine Capitol building around 12:30 p.m.

Chief Clancy says the object appears sleeve-like and weighed about six or seven pounds.

Capitol Police Screener Craig Donahue was walking outside the entrance about 6-8 feet away from the object when it hit the ground.

There were no injuries.

The FAA launched an investigation Monday in an attempt to locate the source of the object.
