PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Police have arrested a Biddeford man charged in connection with two robberies reported on Wednesday night in Portland.

29-year-old John Wedge was found by Biddeford police after a statewide alert was issued for his arrest. He was arrested just after 1:00 a.m. Thursday.

Police say Wedge is a suspect in a robbery at the Maine Smoke Shop at 804 Washington Avenue that was reported just before 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, and another robbery at the Scrub a Dub Car Wash at 1185 Forest Avenue around 8:30 p.m.

Wedge is accused of threatening the clerks at both establishments and demanding money. Police say the clerk at the smoke shop refused and was allegedly assaulted by the suspect, who then fled. The car wash clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.

Wedge is charged with robbery and is being held at Cumberland County Jail.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call Portland police.
