Portland’s Planning Board was expected to vote Tuesday on a plan for a new homeless shelter.

The board was preparing to meet to vote on a 200-bed shelter that would replace the aging and often overcrowded Oxford Street shelter.

The proposed shelter would be located on Riverside Street, and would feature a soup kitchen as well as a medical clinic.

There’s been some disagreement as to the size and location of the shelter, with some saying they’d rather see several smaller shelters located throughout the city.

According to CBS 13 news, a citizen’s referendum that will appear on the ballot in November would limit shelters in the city to 50 beds. That could put a halt to plans for the new shelter, unless the planning board approves it 45 days before the election, which would be this week.

The public hearing was set to get underway Tuesday afternoon over Zoom at 4:30.
