A Caribou man accused of leading police on a chase has been charged with striking a Maine State Trooper.

Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland says 53-year-old Robert Belmain faces several charges stemming from the chase, which happened on June 14th in the town of China.

Belmain was released from Central Maine Medical Center on Thursday morning and taken to Kennebec County Jail. He faces several charges including elevated aggravated assault and reckless conduct. He’s accused of striking Trooper Mickael Nunez, who was attempting to set up spike strips to stop Belmain’s vehicle.

Nunez remains at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta where he’s being treated for serious leg injuries.
