AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN) Governor Janet Mills’ committee which handled her inauguration has been fined $2,000 by an ethics watchdog.

The Bangor Daily News reports that the committee owed the city of Augusta tens of thousands of dollars for her inauguration event at the Augusta Civic Center in January, and ran 10 months over the deadline to pay it back.

A new campaign finance law allows committees managing inaugurations to raise money only up until January 31st following election day, but because the bill was $63,000 more than the $132,000 expected, the committee continued fundraising past that date. The debt was retired earlier this month.

Commissioners settled on the $2,000 fine in a unanimous vote on Wednesday.
