Ground was broken Thursday on a nearly $100 million residence hall construction project on the University of Southern Maine campus in Portland.

According to CBS 13, the construction project is the largest in the college’s history. The new building will house a 3-story, 42,000 square foot Career and Student Access Center, a 580-bed residence hall and a one-acre quad.

The school says the residence hall will help introduce more affordable housing to the Portland campus and alleviate overcrowding at the school’s campus in Gorham.

The project is expected to be completed in 2023.
