Decision on New Portland Concert Venue Moratorium Delayed Again

The Portland City Council is once again delaying a decision on whether to impose a temporary moratorium on new concert venues with a capacity of more than 2,000.

Technical problems marred Monday’s packed council meeting, and councilors postponed almost the entire agenda over the public’s ability to access the meeting.

The possible six-month moratorium would apply to a proposal by concert giant Live Nation to build a 3,300-seat venue on Cumberland Avenue.

The project has raised concerns about traffic and parking and some smaller venues have said it would drive them out of business.

The moratorium would let the Housing and Economic Development Committee review and recommend changes to the city code. It was brought up this spring after Live Nation announced its venue in December.

The Portland city Council will next consider the moratorium in August.
