PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Democrats in Maine’s largest city are pushing for a temporary new indoor mask mandate locally as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise.

The Portland Democratic City Committee endorsed the idea on Sunday night. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended indoor mask use in Cumberland County, where Portland is located, because of high levels of community transmission of the virus.

The Portland City Council reached a 4-4 deadlock on the issue of a new mask mandate when it voted on Sept. 20. The Democrats, the major party in the heavily Democratic city, said the council should reconsider the mandate and pass it.

“We’re all tired of this pandemic, but we should never get tired of trying to do what’s best for our neighbors,” said Charles Skold, chair of the Portland Democratic City Committee. “We can help limit the spread of this virus and ultimately save lives by wearing face masks indoors.”

The entire state was under an indoor mask mandate until May, when it was lifted under most circumstances.
