KITTERY, Maine (WGAN) Officials say one person was found dead after Wednesday’s massive fire that destroyed the Days Inn hotel in Kittery.

Officials with the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office said the body was recovered Thursday around 2:15 p.m. Everyone who was in the building has been accounted for.

The state medical examiner is working to determine the victim’s identity.

Kittery Fire Chief David O’Brien said the building had no sprinkler or fire suppression system, but it had working smoke alarms.

Chief O’Brien said the massive flames, windy conditions, and a lack of water made it difficult to extinguish the fire.

He said one firefighter was injured with cuts. A passerby was also injured but didn’t provide additional details.

Flames tore through parts of the roof, and smoke could be seen from more than a mile away. Part of the building also collapsed.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation on Thursday.
