PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Monitors who collect important data about fisheries are set to return to East Coast fishing boats in a week.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) requires the monitors on the boats to collect information that helps manage fisheries. The requirement for monitors and observers has been suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

NOAA said Monday the monitoring will return to Northeast fisheries on July 1. The agency said in a statement it is “committed to the public health and safety of fishermen, observers and others while fulfilling our mission to maintain our nation’s seafood supply and conserving marine life.”

NOAA said precautionary steps will be taken once monitors are redeployed to reduce the spread of the virus.
