Maine’s former Secretary of State will serve as state auditor.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Matthew Dunlap, who served as Maine Secretary of State for 14 non-consecutive years, will take over the auditor position.

Jacob Norton, who’s currently serving as auditor, announced he would be stepping down. Dunlap will fill the rest of his term.

Dunlap was sworn in as state auditor last year, but initially failed the tests to be certified and had to step down.

The state auditor has the power to perform audits of state, county and municipal governments, as well as any organization that receives or requests an appropriation or grant from state government.
