Governor Janet Mills has informed the Biden administration that Maine is willing to take in Afghans who are fleeing the country after it fell to Taliban rule.

According to the Portland Press Herald, press secretary Lindsay Crete said Maine “is prepared to provide safety and opportunity to Afghan refugees who protected American servicemembers and American interests in Afghanistan.”

It’s not clear if the governor’s administration has been in talks about specific plans for resettling Afghans, who are now facing the Taliban’s oppressive regime which has seized power as U.S. troops withdraw.

While it’s not yet known how many Afghan refugees the state will accept, Catholic Charities of Maine says it will be responsible for their housing, medical and employment services.
